PFW SS20: Balenciaga

Balenciaga - The Weird and Exaggerated

I've never been a massive fan of Balenciaga because typically it is highly branded and streetwear inspired. I have to say Balenciaga is not a brand I follow, I'm not particularly interested in the pieces which have achieved cult status and they are far from the sort of clothes I like to wear. However, I felt this runway was noteworthy so I thought I would talk about it.

Spring/Summer 2020

This show was on social media all weekend because it was a spectacle. The show started out very mundane with what looked like a cleaning staff or security uniform from my local shopping centre. However, this then progressed into outfits with massive shoulders and the streetwear everyone has come to expect from the brand.

Everything was very over the top, from the shoulder pads to the high neck line, there was something truly ridiculous about it all. I wouldn't say much of the runway was very flattering and in fact a lot of it bordered on the worst part of 80s fashion.

There are some more wearable pieces which for me is basically one style of dress, which is a bodycon style velvet mini dress. There were two versions but I loved the black version. It reminds me of the Balmain x H&M dress I have lusted after for years with its high neck, long sleeves and velvet finish. Bella Hadid walked the runway in something similar but it was red and had a bardot top instead.

There were, of course, more exaggerated versions of this dress with both the red and black velvet being used to make dresses with a similar top half but the bottom of the dress was a massive structured skirt which you would struggle to get through a door frame. These were the dresses that took the internet by storm alongside the metallic versions with big bows on the back. I felt this was quite Comme de Garcon or Moschino from a few years ago but the dresses were even bigger for Balenciaga.

This runway had everything you would expect from a Balenciaga runway: slogans, exaggeration, and generally the unexpected.

Based on This Show, What Should You Add to Your S/S Wardrobe?

Velvet Bodycon Dresses. Velvet seems to have gone away for a couple of seasons but looks like it is coming back. For years I have been dreaming about the Velvet dress from the H&M x Balmain collection and this Balenciaga version would be a perfect alternative but I'm going to take a guess and say it is a whole lot more expensive.

Oversized in Every Sense. Everything about this runway was oversized, especially the shoulder pads. The tailoring was great but the shoulder pads really made it statement.

Always Have an Element of Streetwear, The Bomber Jacket. I feel like Balenciaga is known for its streetwear and a bomber jacket has been a big part of this. It seems like the bomber jacket is going no where which is great for me as I love wearing mine.
